Decades of guerilla wars and human rights abuses followed independence in 1962. Since 1986, the rule of President Museveni has brought more stability to the country, but conflicts continue to cause some anxiety in Uganda.

Like in many other countries HIV/AIDS has become a tremendous problem; 1.2 million persons are infected. Malaria, however, causes more deaths. At intervals, the feared Ebola virus is a serious health threat. It is virtually untreatable and the mortality rate is very high. Fatal illnesses are the important underlying cause of the orphan problem.
