Basic Support Program for the Rubaga School
Contributions from our generous supporters make it possible to continue the program for 280 children at the Rubaga Community School.
In July, $10,500 was transferred to Rubaga to cover activity expenses during the 2nd half of 2009. The money is earmarked for food (70% of support), healthcare (6%), and wage supplement to teachers and other staff (24%).
The same amount was transferred in January 2009 so that for the whole of 2009, $21,000 worth of support has been provided. Compared with earlier, the program makes it possible to enhance the meals with more protein-rich food. Also, healthcare services and purchase of medicine have been expanded, and a nurse now pays visits to the school at regular intervals. The monthly wage addition amounts to about $25 per employee, which represents a 40-50% raise. It narrows the gap in comparison to teacher wages in state schools and makes it easier to attract good teachers and maintain quality education and good care for the children.
The 2008 Financial Statement for the School shows that the Rubaga Friends program covered 49% of all food expenses, 36% of healthcare, and 32% of personnel costs.
Other support expenses in 2009
In addition to the 2009 funding of basic activities Rubaga Friends has also paid for fire prevention equipment ($1,000), a new office computer ($550), and a new internet modem ($300).
Pima Rotary Club support for textbooks
In 2008, Pima Rotary Club organized a needed buy-textbooks project. In January 2009, $4,000 was sent to the school, and in May textbooks were bought for students in Primary School classes 1-7. The books cover four major educational topics: English, math, science, and social studies. Rubaga Friends supported the project with $1,320.
It is hard to overestimate the improvement in the quality of education brought about by having a textbook for every child and every subject. Pima Rotary Club deserves lots of praise and thanks!
SIFE and Sam Hughes Elementary School
During the 2009 spring period, SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise at the UA) and the Sam Hughes Elementary School arranged a drive and collected an amazing number of toys for children in Rubaga.

SIFE is now looking into the possibilities of supporting work on a kindergarten building, and considers sending a team of students to Rubaga in Kampala to help out.
Janet Jordan is the new principal of the Sam Hughes Elementary School. She has succeeded Roseanne DeCesari who retired at the end of the year 2008-09. From the onset, Roseanne has been in charge of organizing the Sister School cooperation with Rubaga. Janet Jordan intends to continue this work and we look forward to working together with her.
From the Rubaga School
Friends of the school have established and donated a beautiful website. Take a look at the Rubaga School’s own website at:

The long-time administrative leader of the school, Rose Andersen, is on assignment in Denmark. On June 1, Juliet Tumwebaze was appointed new administrator of the Rubaga School.

You can also ask board members of Rubaga Friends for information and help if you want to be part of this special event. Use phone or e-mail.
We urge everybody to support this great Pima Rotary Club project. Become a sponsor of the City Slicker Rodeo, sign up for competition on a team of 4, or simply buy tickets and attend the rodeo. Do it! Enjoy a day of fun while you help making life better for young people in Tucson and Uganda.
